The focus today is the B1 and B2 Reading Comprehension Sections which consists of 3 different activities:

  • Activity n.1: candidates have to answer multiple choice questions about a text
  • Activity n.2: candidates read a text and choose all the information which are contained in the text among a choice of 15 sentences
  • Activity n.3: candidates have to put in order a story divided in 11 short paragraphs. Only the first one is given.

This section of the B1 and B2 CILS Exam must be completed in 50 minutes.

The difference between B1 and B2 is the length of the texts and the difficulty of the activities.

What is the right approach to the Section?

Each activity is different and requires a specific practice. In the first and second tasks, after skimming the text, candidates should focus on the specific questions or correct information to choose: this is much easier if they look for keywords instead of reading the text just in general. The third activity is very different from the previous two: candidates have to go through all the paragraphs and find the correct order. It can be easy to follow the plot and say what happens at the beginning or at the end, but sometimes it is difficult to say what happens in the middle of the story as there are some ambiguous paragraphs that seem interchangeable. When this is the case, it is essential to read carefully and concentrate on the end and the beginning of each single paragraph to see how to connect them. A good knowledge of conjunctions and linking words can make the difference!
