The DITALS I is an international certification released by the University for Foreigners of Siena.

This certification is perfect for people who want to start teaching Italian as a foreign language but don’t have any teaching experience and need to be introduced to the basic topics.

The DITALS I exam includes three different sections, A, B and C. These parts are specifically related to the student profile chosen by the candidate (children, adolescents, adults and elders etc.)

Let’s focus on the first section!

Section A  is a “Guided analysis of teaching materials“. It means that candidates are provided with a unit taken from an Italian textbook for foreign students and have to analyse it answering the questions asked in 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Mostly, candidates have to choose among given options and to explain their choice.

The main aspects to analyse are:

  • structure of the textbook
  • how grammar is introduced
  • abilities developed by specific activities throughout the unit
  • techniques’ name
  • which skills are developed by some activities
  • language competence’s level of the material provided
  • teaching approach
  • specific target of the textbook

In terms of exam preparation, apart from studying the bibliography, the best way to get familiar with the analysis of teaching materials is going through many different textbooks and trying to do exactly what is required for the exam, answering the same questions included in Section A.

Training yourself with a methodical consultation of the Italian textbooks on the market is definitely the key to pass this part of the DITALS I exam.

So, are you ready to face this challenge?
