The DITALS II certification is the necessary challenge to teach Italian as a foreign language. Released by the University for Foreigners of Siena, it is perfect for people who have already a good teaching experience.
The exam consists of 4 parts: we are going to focus on Section B, called Production of teaching material.
In this section candidates have to analyse a text provided and project a whole teaching unit based on it in 2 hours.
First of all, candidates have to write a description of the linguistic and textual features of the text and its potential in terms of creation of the teaching material.
Then, they have to complete a table which is useful to guide the practical realisation of the unit. The table includes: approach and method, student’s profile, level of linguistic competence, teaching context, learning objectives, total expected time to dedicate to the unit.
After that, candidates project the unit listing all the phases and activities related to the learning objectives previously stated.
Furthermore, candidates have to create one activity of the unit in more detail following these steps:
- they are asked to specify technic chosen, phase of the unit, execution method and instructions for students
- they realise the activity as a student would see it in a textbook
What is the best strategy to get ready for this section?
Section B in the DITALS II Exam is quite complex and requires either a deep knowledge of the theory behind and a good practice.
Studying the bibliography is essential as much as having a good awareness of a number of textbooks for foreign students: it is important to have an idea of how to make a teaching path which follows specific phases and leads students to the achievement of the goals set before.
In order to get familiar with this section is important to create as many teaching units as possible. Any text can be a good start and a challenge.
