In recent years the interest in the Italian language has grown considerably.

A recent research said that Italian is the language most chosen as fourth language to be studied globally. Along with the request to study Italian is also growing the offer of Italian teachers.

Many write to us asking what they need to do in order to teach Italian and below we will try to list some key points.

  • Being Native Speaker. We understand that many of you will disagree on this point, but we are convinced that the language proficiency of the mother tongue Β can not be reached even by the most scrupulous of students.
  • Having previous experience as a languages’ student. It’s important to be able to understand the psychology of those approach in a non-native language.
  • Having excellent interpersonal skills.
  • An excellent training in language teaching. And on this point we would like to spend more time. The starting point should be a BA and a MA in teaching Italian to foreigners. These degree programs are now provided by several Italian universities, for example Siena, Venice, Perugia, Naples, Genoa, Turin and Palermo.

Subsequently, we believe it is essential a Teacher Training Course.

From September 2021 we will be running our Italian Teacher Training Programme. We also suggest, above all the Italian teacher Training course provided by DILIT International House of Rome.

Very good also the course organized by International House in London (CLTA). As far as London is concerned, also the Italian Cultural Institute organizes a similar course.

Then we should talk about certifications, the best known worldwide is the DITALS delivered by University for Foreigners of Siena.

The certification is divided into three levels: the DITALS Base is perfect for non natives or for who is just starting a teaching career, the DITALS I certifies a basic competence in teaching Italian to foreigners, while the DITALS II certifies an advanced expertise.

Then there are the CEDILS by ITALS laboratory in Venice, and finally the DILS PG by University for Foreigners of Perugia, divided in 2 levels.

In addition to this, there are several university’s masters (Post graduated course) of first and second level, for example, the master DITALS in Siena or the Master ITALS in Venice.

After obtaining these certifications we should not stop being curious and continue to participate in training courses, seminars and workshops organised by publishers and language schools.

Good luck!
