It is very important to focus on the difference between them in order to be able to express different past actions.

Let’s see the uses of Imperfecto.
First of all, we use Imperfecto to describe repetitive actions in the past.
El año pasado iba al cine todos los días –> Last year I used to go to the cinema every day
The second use is to describe people or situations in the past.
Mi abuela era muy alta –> My grandmother was very tall
La casa tenía ventanas –> The house had windows
The third and last use is to describe simultaneous actions in the past.
Cuando iba a casa me encontré a Juan –> When I was going home I met Juan
On the other side, we use Pretérito Perfecto Simple in two cases.
The first one is to describe completed actions in the past.
Fui a Madrid –> I went to Madrid
The second use is to describe simultaneous actions in the past.
Cuando sonó el telefono estaba en la ducha –> When the phone rang I was in the shower
