In this period of the year, Easter is the most important event in Spain. People do celebrate this religious festivity all the week between Palm Sunday and Easter, the so called Semana Santa.
Throughout Spain you can join amazing events and the traditional parades to celebrate.
Let’s see some useful Easter vocabulary to learn!
Miércoles de ceniza –> Ash Wednesday
Pascua –> Easter
Lunes de Pascua –> Easter Monday
Semana Santa –> Holy Week
Viernes Santo –> Holy Friday
Domingo de Palmera –> Palm Sunday
One of the most important traditions is the procession that takes place on Sunday before Easter, Palm Sunday.
La procesión –> The procession
La cruz de guía –> the cross that guides the procession
La imagen –> The image of the Virgin, Jesus or a Saint (or the statue carried during the procession)
Los tambores –> Drums
Brotherhoods play an important role during the Holy Week, especially during the procession.
They wear some typical clocks and hoods, carry a statue of Jesus Christ and often chains to flagellate themselves.
Hermandad/Cofradía –> Brotherhood
El penitente –> The penitent
Flagelar –> Flog
Cadenas –> Chains
Capucha –> Hood
Estandarte –> Flag
There are also traditions related to the Easter meal.
Ayunar –> Fast
Cordero –> Lamb
Cordero asado –> Roasted lamb
Salsa –> Gravy
El postre –> Dessert
Arroz con leche –> Rice pudding
Flan de vanila –> Vanille pudding
Pestiños –> fried dough with honey on top, a typical Easter sweet
Roscos fritos –> Fried doughnuts
Vino tinto –> Red wine
